Preface

"Peter and the Wolf" is program music for the beginning of the modern age (20th century). Sergei Prokofiev lived from 1891 to 1953, he was born in Ukraine, lived and died in Moscow. He wrote the setting of the fairy tale for large orchestra in 1936.

The individual characters (Peter, Songbird, Duck, Cat, Grandfather, Wolf, Hunter) are introduced in memorable themes (little melodies). In the original, each character has its own timbre through the different instruments of the orchestra.

But also with the cello and the bow we have many possibilities of sound shaping! Prokofiev laid out his characters in melody and rhythm so that they can be heard clearly in this version for 3 cellos.

The melodies will soon be familiar to you. But the harmony is occasionally irritating because of the frequent chromatic (semitone) regression. The triads are unfamiliar because the notes are so far apart.

For cellists, this means: open your ears!

Listen carefully and think about where the notes are.

To make "Peter and the Wolf" even more versatile, the 1st part is also included in treble clef.

The icons (designed by Yvonne Richter) between the notes help the player to quickly put him/herself into the respective role of the character and to design it accordingly.

Level of difficulty: advanced beginners (1st-5th position)

Foreword by the composer:
As a piano teacher, I'm always looking for easy music for my students.
If I can't find a suitable piece, I write it myself.
The pupils are also my first listeners. I always play the pieces to them and ask if they like it. So I created this item with compositions that my students enjoy playing.

All music titles (except "Procession of the lemmings") are very relative and should indicate the way of playing.

After a piece is finished, I rack my brains over what it should be called.
It has little to do with music, it is rather an additional dimension for our perception. Please do not hope to find soft fur, grain bank and cheek pouches in the piece "My Hamster". Listen into yourself.

Music of other peoples
Singing, playing, and dancing to the music of other peoples can not only make an important contribution to music education but also, especially in our time, encourage children, adolescents, and adults to sample foreign cultures in a pleasant and creative manner.
This collection, Jike the one already published*, was put together in connection with work at a music school. lt is designed to encourage teachers, pupils, and music lovers to become acquainted with the music of other peoples.
The instrumentation is meant to be variable. The various parts can be played or omitted at will. Because music schools are more likely to have a cello, I have used that instrument instead of the bass viol. The cello is to be played pizzicato. Other bass instruments may be used as well. Cello and guitar are used chiefly as accompainiment, and they can also have a percussive function. The cello and the guitar should also play melody parts if their players are able. The guitar's chords do not always correspond to the harmonic feeling of the composition; rather, they supplement it.
The score is one of many possibilities for performance. Several stanzas should always be played, and they should contrast as much as possible. For example, the opening stanza can be played by the softest or deepest-voiced instruments, and the others can be added gradually. Unison stanzas can also have a charming effect.
Social learning is promoted and the aural perception of players is trained when the group works together to develop its own arrangements. Most important, it's fun!

The harmonies and melodies of these pieces often seem strange to our "classical" ears. The peculiarities in the music of other peoples cannot necessarily be written down with our notation. I recommend listening to original recordings from the countries in question. One such example is the French edition "Music folklorique du Mond".

This melodious piece is my most dear, after I named him the whole cycle. Dreamtime - a profound concept of Aboriginal Australians - contains so much wisdom, faith and mysticism ... I have the composition John Jee dedicated (a family friend of my Australian husband), who on 24 July 2006, a few months after heart transplantation, died in Sydney. He was only 20 years old. John died just at the time when I wrote this music 18000 km away. She pushes his "road to paradise" from, lulled by the gentle ocean surf 'the lower voice, at first hesitant, then more freely floating, finally without pain, without fear, redeemed ...

A lively interplay between major and minor; dancing sunbeams, sometimes briefly covered by small clouds ... light and shadows that play together ...

Quietly
This peaceful, quiet piece is inspired by the steady beat of the human heart. I wrote it for my husband Leon, who is now finally on the road to recovery after two serious heart operations. "Silently" is sort of a plea to his heart to keep beating quietly and reliably in this steady beat.

Anticipation
This piece requires hardly a statement: butterflies in the stomach, high-spirited excitement in front of a beautiful event, a non - wait - can, until it is finally here, "blessed wobble" in the quieter middle section, each other's arms race in the end .. Happy. end ...
I've written just after I had booked my ticket for my next stay in Australia with Leon ...

Shalom
On the other hand sometimes nestle full of oriental sound elements that clearly and dominantly take the lead in the first part in the middle part a little 'hidden' in the polyphonic lower voice with familiar Western waltzes. The beginning is vaguely reminiscent of "Hava Nagila", and so I have the Israel composition associated with the hope of a long-awaited peace there. Shalom!

Impression
Inspired by C. Debussy's "Arabesque" in E-flat major, I wrote this piece, which is based on impressionistic harmony and rhythm elements; MollSeptimakkorde, "added sixth ajoutée" and the steady rhythmic opposition 'of the triplets and duplets give a sound, the slightly blurred and shimmering effect and deliberately avoided sharp contours.

A rather dreamed as danced tango, more a reminder of times past, youth, a long lost love ... Full of sweet sadness and longing, tender sad, but certainly not resigned or hopeless ... Come back!
(Note on interpretation: The many typical tango syncopation> eighth-quarter-eighth 'that run in the melody through the entire piece, I play in my recording conscious almost always as quarter-note triplets, which, although in combination with the lower voice is rhythmically somewhat more difficult, but the piece adds softness and dreaminess., it is up to the players, between this and the free-listed, that is, to choose tighter 'version.)
