Three bassoons (Drei Fagotte)

16 exercises for three bassoons

Scope of delivery: score and parts

Foreword

The presented movements of "Drei Fagotte" are intended to provide the musicians with the possibility to monitor themselves better in various aspects of their playing by practicing together with the other members of the ensemble.

The first rule is to listen intensively to the other parts whilst playing. In an ensemble this is a little more difficult for musicians playing the same instruments than it is in an orchestra where you primarily have to adjust to other sounds. In the abovementioned case, the musician´s own part sounds exactly like that of other players and he occasionally feels a little uncertain: Is that me, or am I only hearing my colleague right now?

It is essential to monitor one´s own playing style constantly, to ensure that the volume remains constant all the time and at all dynamic levels. This test often brings surprises to light, also with regard to the instrument´s characteristics.

Unity of rhythm and articulation as collective tasks as well as homogeneity of dynamics from a personal aspect must also be carefully prepared.

We also strongly advise that the musicians switch parts. Each musician should be equally familiar with all parts, in order to be able to bring a personal touch to his own part.

The assignment is valuable. Intelligent discussion of the "Drei Fagotte" will bring much joy to the musicians as well as the listeners.
